Committed to respect for the environment and involved in the sustainability of the planet, QUIMSER helps to reduce the environmental impact of the leather industry with a range of eco-friendly products used to develop tanning and retanning processes based on vegetable extracts, biopolymers and natural resins, resulting in leathers with excellent properties that are 100% metal-free.

These are products with great tanning capacity that offer excellent biodegradability. In this respect, for some years now QUIMSER has been carrying out tests in its laboratories to assess the degree of compostability and biodegradability of leather articles, with highly conclusive results. Under specific conditions of humidity and temperature, and in a medium containing micro-organisms that facilitate decomposition, leather waste can disappear in little more than two months. In this way, leather not only does not pollute the environment but is even transformed into fertiliser for the soil.

These studies demonstrate the sustainability of leather compared with the synthetic materials that imitate it. “Synthetic leather” is usually made of fabrics, plastics and PVC resins, materials that take a very long time to biodegrade.

With various certificates that vouch for good practice in the production of chemical products, such as REACH registration, compliance with ISO standards and collaboration with the Leather Working Group to draw up an environmental management protocol specifically for the leather industry, QUIMSER works every day to bring sustainable solutions to a constantly evolving industry.
