For the second consecutive year, the international bodies of the leather sector, Leather Working Group (LWG) and Leather Naturally (LN), have jointly promoted the celebration of World Leather Day.

World Leather Day, commemorated today, 26 April, is a global campaign whose aim is to raise public awareness of the benefits of leather.

The central theme of this second edition, in 2023, is the longevity of leather and its contribution to a circular society.

Leather Cluster Barcelona supports the initiative and is joining the celebration of World Leather Day, championing leather as a benchmark of the circular economy and an example of sustainable fashion.

Leather is a by-product, a consequence of meat consumption, the main source of protein for more than 90% of the world's population. The leather industry recovers and recycles this by-product so that it does not become waste, and adds value to it in the form of elegant, fine products that are useful to society.

The choices we make as consumers and, in particular, the materials used in the products we buy, have a significant impact on the environment.

In this respect, one of the United Nations' global goals for protecting the planet is responsible production and consumption. In its 12th Sustainable Development Goal, the UN calls on governments, the private sector and society to increase resource efficiency for the sake of environmental preservation, while promoting more sustainable consumption habits.

The first step towards reducing the impact of all of us as individuals is to buy fewer things that last a long time. Choosing leather items, from footwear to furniture, from bags to clothing, means investing in items that can be used for many years. A leather item can last a lifetime.

Leather Cluster Barcelona is an environment of competitive cooperation for promoting cross-cutting, transformative strategic projects with the aim of driving forward the ecosystem of the Catalan leather sector. The cluster is an accredited entity within the Catalonia Clusters programme and has the support of Acció.
