Labin is a commercial brand of Macasa S.A., a family business specialising in plant nutrition, producing products of the highest quality with the mission of improving the health, yield and resistance of plants and crops.

The origins of Macasa-Labin date back to 1948, when grandfather Joan Mateu began using the fleshings from the tanners' hides to make fertilisers and soil improvers. Since then, three generations of the Mateu family have consolidated Labin as a benchmark brand in organic farming, which today exports its products to more than 40 countries.

Since the company's beginnings, Labin's steady commitment to innovation led it to become a pioneer in marketing products certified for organic farming. Today this ongoing research makes its R&D department a benchmark in organic innovation.

This ongoing research into the development of new products and new organic plant nutrition systems resulted, during 2021, in a success story with a circular economy and industrial symbiosis project.

As part of the circular economy project run by the Unió Empresarial de l'Anoia and the Catalan Waste Agency, Labin, a nutrition company serving the agricultural sector, in collaboration with the leather cluster, Leather Cluster Barcelona, carried out a research and development project that has successfully resulted in an industrial symbiosis process making it possible to turn a waste product into an organic resource and into the raw material for making a new product, in this case a biofertiliser for the agri-food sector.

This circular economy project to recover bovine hair obtained during the leather tanning process carried out by tanners, which can be valorised as a biofertiliser, has resulted in a final product that is a granulated fertiliser retaining 100% of the natural nitrogen, without generating any new waste.
