Following the success of the three guided tours held during the third quarter of 2023, the Museum has once again offered the chance to delve into the history and anecdotes of Catalonia’s most emblematic industrial quarter.
The first visit took place on 24 March, and the next is scheduled for 19 April.
The Rec neighbourhood is a living quarter. Since its origins in the 18th century, it has undergone constant transformation right up to the present day, while managing to preserve its essence: the age-old craft of tanning hides. Through literary snippets, old photographs and the recollections of oral witnesses, visitors discover the Igualada quarter in all its dimensions. The Museum aims to leave visitors captivated by the history, anecdotes and curiosities of an incomparable heritage ensemble through a dynamic and participatory visit.
The art of tanning hides has left its mark on every stone of this iconic neighbourhood, considered the most important working tanning centre in Europe. And that is not all: the Rec is also its market gardens, its textiles, its variety of trades, its water, its people. The Rec is past, present and future.
The Rec neighbourhood is the epicentre of Igualada’s leather ecosystem, as it brings together the vast majority of the tanneries, the museums, the water treatment plant and the Adoberia Bella, headquarters of Leather Cluster Barcelona.
The route follows the central part of the neighbourhood, stopping in front of emblematic buildings such as the tanners’ cathedral, Cal Granotes and the Electra Igualadina. It also provides access to two unique spaces that are not normally open to the public, and which have shaped the landscape of the Rec for centuries while adapting to our times.
Leather Cluster Barcelona is an environment of competitive cooperation for promoting cross-cutting, transformative strategic projects with the aim of driving forward the ecosystem of the Catalan leather sector. The cluster is an accredited body within the Catalonia Clusters programme and has the support of Acció.
