The Igualada Leather Museum dresses up in leather for Sant Jordi

Once again this year, the Igualada Leather Museum has dressed the Sant Jordi celebration in leather, the day on which books, roses and culture fill the towns and cities of Catalonia.

To celebrate one of the most special festivals for all Catalans, the Museum shop has encouraged people to give an eternal rose: leather roses from the tanneries of Leather Cluster Barcelona, handmade by the craft workshops that are members of the cluster, Nquart Leather and Evegé. Leather is a recycled material, noble, versatile, hard-wearing and extremely long-lasting. A leather rose can last a lifetime.

Also to mark one of the most cherished days in Catalonia, the Museum has invited people to celebrate Sant Jordi by visiting its Dragon.

It has been on display in the Museum shop area, specifically in the “la llançadora” display case.

The dragon is an exceptional leather piece made by the craftswoman and restorer Sandra Quílez of Nquart Leather using leather from the tanneries of Igualada.

It is inspired by the Chinese dragon, a mythological creature depicted as a long-bodied being, similar to a snake with four claws. The craftswoman spent some 50 hours making it, from the pattern-making through to the final finishes.

The leather used is embossed with a crocodile pattern in green and yellow, with cream-coloured leather details for the horns and eyes made of Swarovski crystals.

“La llançadora” is a space in the Igualada Leather Museum for small-format temporary exhibitions. It is a display case exhibiting a piece of note for its design, technique, exclusivity, use…

The space takes its name in tribute to the shuttle, an essential tool of the loom, and to the original use of the building housing the Museum, which was a former textile factory of the 19th and early 20th centuries.
